STAR TALK

    STARTALK

The Chinese camp was very fun. I enjoyed variety of activities, including Kung fu and tai chi, technology, chopstick competitions, Chinese jeopardy, interesting experiments (a lesson about what floats and what sinks in water), and watching videos.
I have also made several crafts: origami turtles and fish, calligraphy, and some paper crafts. We even named the fish in our classroom Ace “Azwe Cotus” Alpha! I was given the Chinese name
I have learned a lot about Chinese culture and language, such as how to count, use an abacus, greet others, read a calendar, use computers, and do a kung fu punch and more! I also learned several songs in Chinese, like the “head, shoulders, knees, and toes” song.
Our focus in our Chinese program is the sea life, and we have learned the names of several sea animals, the life of sea turtles, and the dangers of pollution. We have the Chesepeake bay, while China has the Qingdao bay, so we have similar pollution problems.
I really hope that I can go to this camp next year to refresh my memory of Chinese. The assistants were really nice too. I really want to learn more Chinese in the future!

The STAR TALK Chinese program is a good immersion program. The teacher only speaks in Chinese so it would be in a typical Chinese classroom.
We did reading, writing, and general spoken language in the class. It was quite challenging to learn these, because I only knew numbers in Mandarin.
Also, in technology class, we used Linguafolio which is an online language tool. It records your language learning process. We made a pixie movie in Chinese for a technology project.
I really enjoyed this program and thought it was very useful.

Startalk Chinese Summer camp was really fun and educational. We learned Chinese and applied it into fun games and songs. It was definitely not a camp in which you sit and study all day. That’s just boring!
The subject of the camp was “Saving Our Bays and Oceans.” We learned the names of sea creatures in Chinese. We made an origami sea turtle. In Chinese sea turtle is “hai gui.” We also made an origami fish. In Chinese, fish is “yu.” These are just two of the crafts related to sea creatures that we did.
In Chinese camp, we have culture class everyday. Culture class is so much fun! We had a chopstick contest, we played jeopardy, we made Chinese sachets, we learned folk tales, and we earned awards for doing a good job in class.
We also have technology class everyday. We did really fun things including making a sea animal movie, making podcasts, taking pictures of our work, recording videos of us, using linguafolio (a website in which you record what you learn in Chinese), making a “glog” using Glogster, using photobooth, using Live Scribe pens (pens that record you voice and you can hear it over and over), and GarageBand. There was a lot of coloring, cutting, pasting, and paper folding in class. We got to use Chinese paint brush to paint our own fans. In Kung Fu and Tai Chi we learned cool moves and we really had a good time. During the educational time, at the beginning of the camp, I have to admit that I was very lost and confused. But, with the help of dedicated teachers, I am now able to understand what the teacher says. We learned how to count, talk, greet each other, express our opinion, write characters, say food names, and more in Chinese. We made a paper aquarium and read a book in Chinese. We presented these to the elementary school students. We even have our own class pet, a beta fish named Ace. At the end of camp we put on a performance with all of the songs and things we learned in camp. It’s our chance to shine! I am proud that I have learned a new language this summer and that’s all thanks to Startalk Chinese camp. This made my summer fantastic!

The first year of the STARTALK Chinese Program went excitedly as planned. This government-granted program offered Chinese language and writing, fun cultural activities, tough self-defense, and useful technology skills to the eager elementary and middle school students of diverse cultural backgrounds.
In Chinese language and writing class, the teacher only talks and writes in Mandarin which gives us a sense of Chinese ambience. She shows us pictures and movements to help explain the meaning of every Chinese word. I learned to say and write colors, greetings, seasons, continents, pollution, time, numbers, sea animals, food, family members, and more in Chinese. Our class did various fun art projects and presents them in Chinese in front of an audience. Repetition is the key to learning Chinese language and writing.
Chinese cultural class is my favorite. Participating in several Chinese cultural activities perks up the excitement in me. Making hsiang baos and Zongzi, playing with Chinese yo-yos, using the abacus, and brush painting were only some of the fun filled projects offered. I also used chopsticks in picking up soybeans and Skittles in a competition. Our class had our own dragon boat contest against each other. We learn Chinese culture through PowerPoint presentations. Questions were asked after each presentation and whoever answers correctly earns a fish. Earning ten fish corresponds to a prize.
The martial arts class involves both physical strength and mental knowledge. This 30-minute session teaches us important skills to defend myself against villains. Kicking and punching isn’t the only thing there is in Chinese martial arts. Power and forms are the key to outscoring your enemy.
Using the Apple iMac computers to making my own Internet page, is what technology class is about. Linguafolio enables me to track my progress in our class. Through the Glogster website I was able to upload what I learned, posted videos, podcasts, and pictures of ourselves. With the help of Pixie, I created my own movie slideshow about a sea animal all in Chinese. The best part was using Livescribe pens to note down familiar words in Chinese.
Overall, the STARTALK Program under the guidance and expertise of our Chinese instructors, paraeducators, and interns from Taiwan helped me learn not only the Chinese language, but also opened my eyes to the rich heritage of Chinese culture and history in which I am a part of it.
